The Bear

As a designer Laura Slater’s methodology is centred around developing accessible products as a vehicle for the interaction with directional, colour, pattern, and print as part of the everyday. Process is an integral part of Laura’s practice with drawing and printmaking at its core. Laura’s outcome is predominately resolved through the intuitive method of working with composition, colour and surface through the act of making.

Laura’s Bear design was based on interpreting aspects of the Sheffield Peak District, observing shape, texture and composition inspired by the landscape. Her chosen colour palette references shades and accent colours found in ordinance survey maps, that reflect the area of inspiration, whilst giving a fresh and celebratory feel to the finished design.

Laura Slater
Laura Slater established her studio practice as a textile pattern designer and screen printer after graduating from the Royal College of Art in 2007. She runs her print workshops and studio in Leeds. Laura’s work is occupied with the engagement we have with pattern and colour and its ability to connect us with the environments and objects we surround ourselves with.
The Sponsor
Sheffield Home Office Staff
At the Sheffield Home Office, a small group of staff during 2019 set themselves a challenge to raise £1000 to sponsor a Snowflake at Christmas. They completely exceeded their expectations through various fundraising activities such as bake sales, tuck shops, sponsored walks and raffles. In total they managed to raise an incredible £3000. The staff also volunteered to help build some of the Snowflakes and from that day, they thought if they could persuade other units in their department to join up together, they could raise enough to sponsor a Bear in 2020. There are now hundreds of people in the Home Office with their hearts set on raising money for this campaign to help Sheffield Children's Hospital.
