The Bear

At Tom Pigeon and Make Bank founded by Kirsty Thomas, they love colour, pattern, getting messy and wearing overalls! Polar Painter has been inspired by all of these things, this is a creative Bear who loves making things, doesn’t mind spilling a bit of paint and dresses for the job. Reflecting the Tom Pigeon house style, the design of this Bear comprises a big splash of colour and shape.

Tom Pigeon x Make Bank
Kirsty Thomas is the founder of design studio Tom Pigeon and social enterprise Make Bank. Kirsty was born in Scotland but studied in both Liverpool and Manchester. Her studio is based on the East coast of Scotland but often returns to Liverpool. Kirsty has studied a Design degree and since then worked across the creative industries for over 20 years and now works with clients around the world including Team GB, Tate Modern, V&A and The Barbican. Design Studio Tom Pigeon started off creating jewelry with has developed and much of their current work is now print based, developing patterns for textiles and homewares. The Make Bank is a social project which helps to tackle creative poverty in UK schools. They provide materials and support for disadvantaged young creatives. Kirsty is inspired by many different things, some complex like the harbours on the East coast, modernist architecture, other more simple things like the colours of ice cream. Her work is about taking a design and paring it back to its most simple form…but also simply likes to create things that make others smile.
The Sponsor
Ackroyd & Abbott
Ackroyd & Abbott was established in 1952 and has since steadily grown through contracted and speculative residential and commercial development. Having previously supported the Children’s Hospital, they were keen to do so again with the Bears of Sheffield. Everyone at Ackroyd and Abbott hopes this will be an unmitigated success and create some much needed joy, in these strange times and of course raise much needed money for the Hospital. Their Bear was readily picked as its wearing a bib and braces and is ready to create and produce, something we strive to do ourselves. They have also been delighted to foster all the Bears throughout the pandemic, in one of their industrial buildings.
