The Bear

Studio Luz’s design for Dancing Bear is a celebration of movement through free-flowing lines inspired by the gestures and forms of dancers and takes its cue from the historically cruel practice of taming Bears to dance for entertainment.

The design works to transform the stately frame of the Bear sculpture into a positive marker of physical expression, with lines and marks that overlap and intertwine to create an experience of motion as the viewer circles the Bear.

William Luz is an artist based in Plymouth working under the title, Studio Luz. His work is well-renowned for its flowing, gestural lines and colourful abstract compositions and has been commissioned by the likes of Nike, Facebook, Aesop, The Barbican, Ace & Tate and the Hepworth Museum.

Meadowhall is a long-standing supporter of Sheffield Children’s Hospital, most recently selling charitable face coverings in support of The Children's Hospital Charity as well as raising donations through its in-centre Giving Box. Since opening in 1990, Meadowhall has been at the heart of the Sheffield community, committed to bringing people together and supporting organisations and charities across the city. The centre will be sponsoring two Big Bears on the trail as well as housing four Big Bears and a few of the Little Bears in the centre over the Summer. In October, Meadowhall will also be hosting the farewell event where all of the Bears from across the trail will come together for one final farewell.
