The Bear

Lisa Maltby’s first collaboration with Sheffield Children’s Hospital was her Herd of Sheffield Elephant, which was covered in smaller Elephants in her charming illustrative style. Her design for her Bear is no different, featuring lots of smaller Bears, based on the well known song ‘Bare necessities’.

Lisa was inspired by the uplifting message in this song about worrying less and living more – focusing on the simple things in life and not letting too many things over-complicate it.

Lisa Maltby is an award winning illustrator, designer and lettering artist from Sheffield. Her diverse skills have enabled her to work on a wide range of projects, from hand painted murals to commercial designs for companies such as Penguin Random House, English Heritage, John Lewis and Chatsworth House. Lisa also researches and writes about the creative industry which has led her to write for international design blogs and speak at industry events.

Sheffield Libraries leads the city in the joy of reading for pleasure which has been shown to be one of the most important factors in contributing to a child’s future success. Across all ages, reading has a real, positive and significant impact on wellbeing. Something we can all benefit from no matter where we are on our reading journeys. 2020 was The Sheffield Year of Reading, despite the pandemic Sheffield Libraries still made it a landmark year for the city celebrating reading in all its forms. Even though their buildings were closed they engaged with young people by providing online events and activities, distributing the Big City Read free books in parks and to schools, and providing families with book bags to enjoy reading at home. Their e-library service saw surge in new readers and they continue to provide new titles for all ages via this ‘free library in your pocket’. Their year of reading writer in residence Nik Perring worked with the Children in Care Council to enable them to create a fabulous book of poetry “The Can in Can’t” showing their creativity and flare for expression through writing. They’ll celebrate the achievements of the Sheffield Year of Reading at the nationally renowned Sheffield Children’s Book Awards in November 2021. Sheffield Libraries' primary aim is to get more people in Sheffield enjoying reading more, as they know this to be one of life’s Bear Necessities!
