How to make an easy link

If you joined us for Herd of Sheffield, you’ll notice we’re using a different system from before.

Our clever friends at Creative Stream have created a website that also doubles up as a kind of app, to make what is known as a Progressive Web App (it’s not an app but it behaves like one when viewed on mobile). This means that you can’t download it from the App Store or Google Play, but it does mean a larger percentage of your donations will go to the Children’s Hospital, and it also means that we are able to take mobile donations more easily.

You can make a button that displays on your phone and makes it possible to pick up a bear quickly when you see one. This process is called “Add to Home Screen”, and creates this lovely bear icon

iPhone

  1. Launch Safari app.  This does not work from the Chrome app.
  2. Enter www.bearsofsheffield.co.uk into the address field. Tap “Go.”
  3. Tap the icon featuring an arrow coming out of a box along the bottom of the Safari window to open a drop-down menu.
  4. Scroll down and tap “Add to Home Screen.” The Add to Home dialog box will appear, with the Bears icon on the left side of the dialog box.
  5. Enter the name for the shortcut using the on-screen keyboard and tap “Add.” Safari will close automatically and you will be taken to where the icon is located on your iPhone’s desktop.

Android

  1. Launch Chrome app.
  2. Open www.bearsofsheffield.co.uk
  3. Tap the menu icon (3 dots in upper right-hand corner) and tap Add to homescreen.
  4. You’ll be able to enter a name for the shortcut and then Chrome will add it to your home screen.

N.B. You will have to log in again once you have created the shortcut, but rest assured, if you caught a few bears while you were logged in before that, they will be kept safe. The same goes if you log in with a Facebook account which has the same email address as your account.
